The benefits of robotic, driverless cars are great, believe many futurists. Children could be chauffeured in supervised safety, DUIs would no longer exist, and 41,000 lives could be saved each year in the U.S. alone.

On the way to self-driving cars are the appearance of all sorts of compter enhanced design applications. Although these products and projects do not aim explicitly to create a fully autonomous car, they are seen as incremental stepping-stones in that direction. Many of the technologies like backup cameras, self-steering take-over, and accident avoidance sensors serve as components of any future driverless car. For now, they are being marketed as gadgets that assist human drivers in one way or another.
