London Heathrow Airport innovative new Ultra POD transport system connects Terminal 5 with areas of business airport ample parking. The British system is developed one of the first examples of a new personal rapid transit technology that could benefit many parts of the world in the future. Each pod is designed to carry up to four people and their luggage (including pushchairs and bulky items) in temperature-controlled comfort. The pods do not need a ticket and are free to use. They operate on a "demand" basis, so there's no waiting around time-bound services, and any stop along the way. Just skip it and go! The pods are futuristic style without a driver and self-direction and run automatically along designated tracks (called "runners"). They are electrically and travel on rubber wheels, giving a smooth quiet ride. A central computer monitors demand and ensures that pods are available in the right place at the right time. The slides are about 2.4 miles Heathrow (3.8 miles) long, and the journey time from Terminal 5 Sectors Parking is located about five minutes. This POD transport system is an example of "green transport" in action - it is energy efficient and low emissions, and replaces an estimated 50000 bus journeys per year. In addition we significantly reduced journey times between Heathrow Terminal 5 and car parks business.
