Choosing Self Storage in California

In many of the larger cities within California, it should not be surprising that there are a wide variety of self storage options and other storage rental options to choose from. The reason is because with the way that the home market is in California, many people are buying or renting smaller properties than can accommodate the amount of “stuff” that they have, and face it, Californians tend to have quite a good deal of possessions. For this reason, it is important to know how to choose a long term storage unit that you can use to keep your property safe when it cannot be stored at your home. Not only are there standard storage rental facilities that offer climate controlled storage for anything you can fit into your lot space, but there are also long term storage options for military personnel who are shipping out, or Californians who are moving out of state but want to leave some of their possessions behind in a safe place, for example. There are also options for vehicle storage, RV storage and boat storage which serve the same purpose: Keeping your property safe until such a time that you can retrieve it.

If you are clearing out your garage, replacing the furniture in your home, or going on a trip and leaving a vehicle behind, having a storage rental unit will be a good idea. Most self storage companies offer insurance that is similar in nature to renter’s or home owner’s insurance, protecting your property in the event that anything happens to it while you are away. This means that you can rest assured that your stored property will be kept safe even if you are not there to watch over it.

There are so many self storage options in California that choosing the right option for your own needs can seem difficult, daunting or outright overwhelming. The truth is, however, choosing a storage unit is not difficult as long as you ask yourself and answer some fairly basic questions about what your needs are relating to what storage options are supplied by the company in question.

How much space do you need? How much stuff do you have? Most storage companies will help you estimate how much space is needed to accommodate the amount of stuff that you want to store. Going bigger is always better if you can afford it, as it will provide you with additional room in case a need to store anything else happens to come up. How long do you plan on storing your stuff for? Some storage facilities only provide a short term solution, while others offer six month and year contracts, or even longer. Don’t be shy when talking to the storage facility employees about your needs. If you specifically have a long term or short term need, let them know so that they can custom tailor their solution to your requirements. What are you storing? If you are storing a car, a boat or an RV, obviously a first floor, street access storage facility is going to be ideal, especially if there is a big enough door to get your property through, of course. If you are storing boxes of toys from your childhood, a third floor storage room with elevator access may be more your style, especially since these are much more cost effective. How much insurance do you need? If you are storing a car, furniture and other costly belongings, having insurance is an absolute must. If you are storing old photographs, there is not much that having insurance can do for you, but it still may be wise to purchase considering how inexpensive it normally is. For a few dollars, you can have some real peace of mind with storage insurance, so make sure that the facility you choose offers it, and offers a scale of different prices and coverage options so that you can choose the right level of coverage for your needs.

Choosing a self storage unit or facility should not be a difficult task, but the more you research the better off you will be because different storage facilities offer different sized storage units, different prices, different levels of insurance, different payment options and so on and so forth. By researching the different options available to you, you can get a much better feel for which storage facility will best meet your needs both on a short and a long term basis.

You can use it to hide a gift that you are planning to give a person, you can use it in order to be ale to keep something precious to you without others getting to know about it, or you can have a keep safe for items that are precious to you. When you have self storage mini storage you are also able to literally be the only person who has knowledge of what items are inside of your mini storage.

Vehicles storage can be a must for vehicle collectors, people who have more then one car or simply people who do not have a place to put their car for the time being. New Mexico is an area where there are some tourists but where there are also a larger amount of people looking for a wonderful nature adventure. This is a part of the reason that so many people may need vehicle or RV storage while they go up into the mountains to adventure or they may even take their RV with them but need and area for their car while they are away.

One part of self storage that some people do not know about is that there is insurance you are able to take out on the times that you have there. Some people do not want to put their items in self storage because they are frightened that they may be stolen or have other problems due to being left alone for a longer amount of time. You are able to get the money amount for items that are damaged, lost, Stolen and injured in any way.

For some people whose fears may be viewed as less rational for instance fearing a fire, earthquake or other forms of natural disasters causing their items to be injured you would still be able to collect your insurance. This for some people makes it easier for them to leave their items in self storage or even help them sleep better at night knowing that their investment in their items is a safe one they can count on.

Storage in general is needed fairly often. Individuals use them, businesses use them and more individuals then many might think. For some businesses getting a storage unit is a great investment, especially if they are a restaurant getting a storage unit that has climate control. For restaurants there may be meat that they get shipped or other items that they may not have room for on the premises at the time and with climate controlled storage that meat or other items that are able to go bad without proper temperature are able to have the temperatures they need and stay in great condition for until they are ready to be moved or used.

With all of the restaurants that there are in New Mexico and all of the locations that many people visit or that have tourists this can be needed, especially if you happen to get an order early or before the time you expected of an item that needs cooler temperatures. For more expensive restaurants or restaurant that sell wine having a climate controlled storage unit can be a great idea for if you need to have more wine available or if you want to have more wine on hand rather then needing to order another type even after it ages even longer and becomes worth even more.

Evolution of Self Storage Unit

Self storage units, also known as self-service storage units have become an important staple in the lives of many busy people. These storage facilities lease space to small businesses or individuals and the space leased can be used for a variety of purposes. Even though people have grown familiar with the idea of self storage few know the history behind the storage unit. Most people believe that self-storage units are a recent invention when they have been in existence for a several decades.

The first self storage companies were established in the mid 1970s. These companies began leasing units of various sizes to individuals and businesses in need of additional storage space. The initial rules put in place by self-storage companies prohibited individuals from sleeping or otherwise living in their storage unit. They also prohibited the resale or subleasing of the storage units. Overtime more rules were put into place to prevent individuals and businesses from storing potential hazardous materials.

Throughout the years the self storage industry has continued to grow rapidly. As more people all over the world move on a regular basis the need for private storage facilities has grown rapidly. Individuals moving for personal and professional reasons have started using self storage facilities to store furniture and other items between moves. Even after moving many people have chosen to use self storage units as a convenient way to store seasonal items and other belongings that are inconvenient to have around at all times but are too valuable to throw away.

Many of the first self storage units were located in urban areas and were part of larger buildings. Quite a few businesses and even public schools leased out storage space to the general public. In some areas huge self storage facilities existed that had elevators and other features to help customers get to and from their storage units. Overtime self storage facilities were opened that catered to individuals storing large items such as cars, boats, and RVs.

Self storage units come in a wide variety of sizes designed to fit the needs of individuals with a few items or people needing to store enough furniture to fill a house. Storage units start out at units that are no bigger than the average walk in closet and go up to the size of a two car garage. Most self storage units can be accessed by using a metal door that rolls up in a way that is similar to the average garage. Initially self storage units were built using concrete and metal with the renter being asked to provide their own lock. Over the years construction has become more secure as features are added to interest new customers.

Self storage units now come in climate controlled and cold storage units. Climate controlled units are well constructed and insulated in such a way that the temperature of the unit remains constant. These storage units remain dry and comfortable which helps prevent molding and other forms of damage that sometimes occurs when items are in storage. Cold storage self storage units are also offered to provide small businesses and others a way to safely store food items and even wine for long periods of time.

Regardless of whether a person needs traditional storage, climate controlled storage, or cold storage they are charged a monthly rental fee. These fees are usually determined by the type of facility being used and the size of the storage unit. Over recent years self storage facilities have developed a contract that has be signed by all individuals leasing self storage units.

These contracts usually state the individual renting the storage unit will not store hazardous material in their unit, will not attempt to live in their unit, will pay their rent on time each month, and also promises that the individuals property will never be touched or disturbed by the staff or management of the facility. If the renter does fail to pay their rent a lien is placed on their storage unit and the contents of the storage unit can eventually be auctioned off. In recent years storage facility auctions have become a popular way for collectors and resellers to gain access to second hand items cheaply.

Self storage facilities have also changed their security methods over the past few decades. As outdoor storage facilities became popular storage facility owners began seeking new ways to protect their customer’s property. This has been done with the help of advanced technology such as keypads and codes used for gaining access to the storage facility, video surveillance used to monitor the property, and even gates and fences designed to deter criminals.

The advancement of self storage facilities seen to date are only the first of many. As millions of individual’s world wide lease self storage units for personal and professional use the self storage industry will continue to change and grow.

What Makes a Good Self Storage Experience?

When circumstances in life require the use of a mini storage unit, what features should you look for to be sure you are getting the best possible experience for your circumstances?

Before you begin looking for specific features, examine your needs. Will you need the self storage for a long period of time, or is it simply a temporary need for a few months?

Are you storing expensive or weather-sensitive items, or is it excess clothing that your store won’t sell during the summer or boxes of toys you need to clear out of your home during the sale process?

How much do you need to store? Is there a storage unit in that size?

Will you need frequent access to your materials, or will you move the materials in and leave them for a long period of time?

Do you need vehicle storage for an RV, car, boat, snowmobile or classic car? Can you store it in an open parking lot, or does it need enclosed storage?

After answering these questions, then look for a storage rental company that meets your needs.

Access
You’ll want a business that gives you access to your items 24/7 if you are in and out of your unit frequently. You don’t want to sacrifice security for this convenience, so look for a gated, fenced unit that allows access through a key code, or that has 24-hour surveillance so you can be let in at any time.

If you need climate control in a mini storage, you may find this feature inside a building – often a place of employment that may be locked and inaccessible during night hours. Before renting this kind of storage unit, be sure that you won’t be inconvenienced by the limited hours.

Security
Security can be a major issue, particularly if you need to store items of some value. Look for self storage businesses with electronic gates and lots of good lighting. A patrolled lot is an additional safety feature.

You may want to consider only those businesses that offer 24-hour, on-site monitoring.

Unit Sizes
It’s important to carefully consider your needs and see if the self storage company offers the size of storage unit that you need.

Here are some guidelines as you consider the amount of space you’ll need. Remember the units are cubic feet, so you can stack up to the ceiling, if the items you are storing allow it. If you can’t stack your items, you may need a larger space:

5′ x 5′ unit holds approximately one large pickup load full, or about 50 file boxes. If you are dealing with large numbers of boxes, you can multiply this figure to calculate the storage capacity of large units (for example, a 5′ x 10′ unit will hold about 100 file boxes) 5′ x 10′ unit will hold a mattress set, sofa, chest of drawers and a dining room set – the contents of a tiny, efficiency apartment. (2 pickup loads) 5′ x 15′ unit is large enough for approximately 3 pickup loads, or a slightly larger apartment for one person. 10′ x 10′ unit should hold the contents of a standard, one-bedroom apartment. It is large enough for some appliances and personal belongings as well as the standard furniture, or about 4 pickup loads. 10′ x 20′ unit should hold the contents of a three or four bedroom home, with major appliances and furniture, as well as personal belongings in boxes.

Climate Control
If you live in an area with extreme temperature fluctuations, very high humidity, very high heat or extreme cold, you may consider a climate controlled storage unit.

These units are in a self-contained building that has a heating and cooling system to moderate the temperature to between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and keep the humidity controlled.

If you have sensitive documents, electronic equipment, furs or other valuables, you may want to consider climate control storage units.

Moving Assistance
Some locations for self storage offer the use of a truck, dollies or hand trucks during the move. This can save you rental on such equipment, and might be worth choosing the company that provides these services over another that does not.

Vehicle Storage
People often have a need for vehicle storage, and many self-storage locations attempt to accommodate that need. RV storage and boat storage are two common needs, but vehicle storage for classic cars, snowmobiles, and vehicles in the process of being moved is also necessary.

See if the self storage facility simply offers an open parking lot for vehicle storage or it is covered, and find out if there is extra security for the vehicle storage lot.
